Weak operating systems used to be survivable.

Every business runs on one, and most of it was never designed. It accumulated. That was affordable while technology moved slowly. AI raises the cost of leaving it unexamined, because automation applied to undesigned work multiplies the mess.

This site publishes methods, not services

There is no consulting or advisory here and nothing is being pitched. What there is: three free guides, a book, and a published model held by the Edge151 Institute.

The book will be sold when it is published, and the instruments behind the guides will be released as tools you buy and use yourself. Neither is ready yet, which is why there is nothing to buy today.

The guides are complete methods. Each one sets out a version you can run with your own team, at no cost, with nothing to sign up for. That is the point of the site, and it is the most useful thing on it.

Start with a guide

Three levels, three methods. The same organisation looks different depending on how closely you look at it, so start wherever the question you are holding actually sits.

  • CONTOUR

Capability profile for the whole organisation, scored consistently and repeatable over time. Half a day with your leadership team.

    Read the guide

  • DATUM

Maturity baseline for a chosen workflow across people, process and technology. Two hours.

    Read the guide

  • EXPOSURE

Where time actually goes at task level, and which tasks carry genuine AI opportunity. Two weeks of logging.

    Read the guide

One tool is already open. Datum Quick Grade grades every phase of how your organisation moves value, free and in your browser. Try Quick Grade.

The instruments behind these methods are in development and will open as tools you can use. Until then the guides carry the method, and the guides stay free either way.

The thinking underneath

Every business already has an operating system, whether anyone designed one or not. It decides how demand enters, how work moves, how decisions get made, and what comes out the other end. Most business problems that look departmental are outputs of that system.

That argument is set out in full on one page, and at more depth in the book.

  • The Business Operating System

What it is, why an unexamined one now costs more than it used to, and how to look at your own using one workflow you already have.

    Read the page

  • Workflows, Decisions, Discipline

Twenty chapters and five working appendices, including the Workflow X-Ray and the Decision Design Canvas. Workflows move value, decisions direct it, discipline protects both.

    About the book

The Edge151 Institute

The Institute is an independent standards body for the ability of an organisation to evolve. It holds and publishes the models, methods and standards, including the Business Evolution and Resilience Model and the scales the instruments are built on.

Keeping the standard separate from anything commercial is what lets a result be measured against something published, not against somebody’s judgement on the day.

Run a method and see what it surfaces

The guides need nothing from you beyond a couple of hours and your own team. Run one, look at what comes back, and decide what to do about it.
